Budanov on Kyiv shooting: No one has right to abduct service members with impunity

According to him, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General's Office are already investigating the incident.

Budanov stressed the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

He said that "no one has the right to abduct service members with impunity, open fire on the streets of our cities, or give and carry out criminal orders."

Kyiv shooting on Sept. 2

Overnight and on the morning of Sept. 2, reports emerged online of a shooting in Kyiv's Berezniaky neighborhood involving representatives of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence and the Security Service of Ukraine. The Kyiv City State Administration said traffic on Yuriia Shumskoho Street had been blocked.

The Security Service of Ukraine said it had thwarted an assassination attempt against one of the leaders of a Russian opposition movement who had arrived in Kyiv for Independence Day.

The reports emerged after Oleksandr Fortuna, chief of staff of the Russian Volunteer Corps unit within Ukraine's Defense Intelligence, said on Sept. 1 that Stepan Kaplunov, the corps' deputy commander for combat operations, had been abducted in Kyiv. According to Ukrainska Pravda, Wednesday's shooting in Kyiv was linked to his disappearance.
