The ceremony took place in Finland's Åland Islands.
Photos show the grooms wearing light blue vyshyvankas – traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts – paired with beige trousers. The couple held bouquets of sunflowers, while the wedding venue was decorated with traditional embroidered towels, wheat, dahlias, and sunflowers.
Later in the celebration, the couple changed into white vyshyvankas featuring traditional red and black embroidery that incorporated the Ukrainian coat of arms.
“The fight for a free Ukraine is close to our hearts, so Ukrainian culture ran through the day,” the couple wrote. “We wore vyshyvankas – traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts – had Ukrainian table linen, food, and drinks.”
Tynkkynen and Jefflen noted that in lieu of gifts, they asked guests to donate to two organizations supporting Ukraine.
The couple also shared that their wedding rings hold a unique significance, having crafted the jewelry from two types of gold donated by their families. To complement the rings, they incorporated a symbolic fragment of metal from an ammunition box that Finnish volunteers had originally purchased for Ukrainian defenders.
The couple thanked everyone who helped organize and participate in the Åland Islands wedding, giving special recognition to Ganna Gladkykh, a Ukrainian singer who performed traditional songs during both the ceremony and the reception, as well as the Ukrainian chefs who prepared the wedding menu.
Tynkkynen is a prominent Green Party politician and made history as Finland's first openly gay member of parliament. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, he has visited Ukraine multiple times. He and Jefflen – who had been together for over a decade at the time of their wedding – have remained active, vocal supporters of Ukraine's struggle for freedom.
