“The strikes hit production shops, causing significant damage to utility and railway networks,” the company wrote. “There were no fatalities, though one worker was hospitalized.”
The attack heavily damaged primary processing and auxiliary equipment, production buildings, and the facility's internal railway infrastructure, Metinvest reported.
Crews at the plant are clearing debris to allow inspectors to access the site and assess the full extent of the damage.
“Since August, Russia has fired a total of 17 ballistic missiles at Zaporizhstal. This marks the fourth attack in just over a month – a systematic campaign of terror targeting Ukrainian industry and its people,” said Oleksandr Myronenko, Chief Operating Officer of Metinvest Group. “Moscow continues to deliberately destroy production facilities that sustain our economy, provide jobs for thousands of residents in Zaporizhzhya, and produce Ukrainian steel. These repeated strikes on an idle plant are a direct attempt to prevent it from ever recovering and resuming operations.”
A devastating Russian attack on the plant on August 11 killed eight employees, injured 28 others, and completely halted operations. The strike heavily damaged key processing and auxiliary equipment, facility infrastructure, and the plant’s electrical power systems, fracturing critical production chains.
A subsequent attack on August 27 damaged the same production facilities, though no casualties were reported.
A third strike on September 12 targeted the plant's iron and steel production lines, power infrastructure, and logistics networks, injuring four employees.
Metinvest previously shut down its Kametstal steel plant in Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, following a Russian ballistic missile strike on the night of September 5.
A Russian ballistic missile attack on Metinvest Group facilities in Zaporizhzhya overnight on August 11 caused the Zaporizhstal plant to shut down.
Zaporizhstal specializes in hot- and cold-rolled carbon and low-alloy steel sheets and coils, as well as steel strips, slabs, and merchant pig iron.
The plant has an annual production capacity of 4 million tons of pig iron, 3.6 million tons of hot-rolled products, and 1.2 million tons of cold-rolled products.
Metinvest Group is primarily owned by businessman Rinat Akhmetov’s System Capital Management, which holds a 71.24% stake, and the Smart-Holding group, which owns 23.76%.
