EU gears up for game-changing energy plan to break free from Russian reliance

The European Commission will unveil a new energy plan in
February to reduce reliance on Russian resources and lower energy prices,
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced
at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
She highlighted that prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion
of Ukraine, Europe was heavily dependent on Russian energy.
“This energy seemed cheap, but it made us vulnerable to
blackmail,” von der Leyen said.
The EU plans to reduce electricity costs through renewable
energy sources and nuclear power. Wind and solar energy now generate more
electricity than all fossil fuels combined, von der Leyen noted.
“Today, our competitiveness relies on returning to low and
stable energy prices. Clean energy is the mid-term solution because it is
affordable, creates quality jobs domestically, and strengthens our energy
independence,” she said.
“We must not only continue diversifying our energy sources
and expanding clean renewable production but also invest in new green energy
technologies, such as nuclear fusion, advanced geothermal energy, and
solid-state batteries,” von der Leyen added.
The European Union plans to release the detailed energy
strategy in February.
The World Economic Forum in Davos began Jan. 20, 2025.
