Ukraine has finally reached a consensus with neighboring Baltic countries and the European Commission on banning Russian and Belarusian food exports to the European Union, Ukraine’s Deputy Economy Minister, Taras Kachka, said at the Forbes "Made in Ukraine" Exporters Summit, Ukrainian agribusiness website Latifundist reported on March 22.
The European Commission could adopt this ban as early as April. Approval for the ban is expected to be obtained at the European Summit on March 22.
“This will be the most significant and prominent political project of the European Parliament,” said Kachka.
"It allows us to expand this initiative to non-agricultural goods not subject to sanctions, primarily metallurgy. This is important for us to realize the project of displacing Russian raw materials and semi-finished products from the European market and replacing them with Ukrainian ones."
Ukraine must convey to the European community the absurdity of allowing Russian and Belarusian goods access to the EU market, he said.
Agriculture ministers of Poland, Czechia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have reportedly called on the European Commission to ban grain imports from Russia and Belarus to the EU.
