Germany will provide Ukraine with an additional EUR 381 million ($417 million) in humanitarian aid in 2023, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said during a speech at the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in London, UK, on June 21.
Baerbock shared a poignant story during her speech, recounting a conversation with a 16-year-old girl in Kharkiv who expressed her longing for a normal life. The girl described how the daily countdown to 45 seconds to find shelter had become routine due to the constant threat of Russian missile strikes in the city.
The focus of the conference, Baerbock emphasized, was on the younger generations in Kharkiv and other affected areas. She said that Germany stands committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression for as long as necessary.
"We want Ukraine to emerge victorious in this war and to achieve lasting peace," Baerbock said.
"Today, we are here to emphasize that the German government is intensifying its efforts to assist Ukraine in its recovery. Humanitarian support is the starting point. In 2023, Germany will provide an additional EUR 381 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, covering a wide range of needs, from generators to food and tents for those who have recently been displaced or lost their homes."
Germany will continue its assistance in mine clearance, recognizing the importance of removing landmines towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the population, Baerbock added.
She also reminded the conference’s attendees that Germany has already provided substantial support to Ukraine, including military aid, amounting to EUR 16.8 billion ($18.3 billion) in its ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression.
