12-year-old girl fighting for her arm after going to central Chernihiv to sell bracelets

In a pivotal surgical procedure at Kyiv’s
Okhmatdyt Hospital, medical teams have tirelessly worked to operate on a
12-year-old girl who sustained severe injuries during a
Russian rocket strike that killed seven civilians in central Chernihiv on
Aug. 19. The doctors are in a fierce struggle to save the young girl’s
traumatized arm.
The latest developments surrounding the child’s condition were provided by her sister, Diana Borets, who also resides in Chernihiv.
“On Aug. 19, my sister went downtown for the first time this summer to hang out with a friend. The girls had planned to sell beaded bracelets to raise funds for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. She spent the entire evening making them,” shared Borets.
According to Borets, her younger sister was wounded by shrapnel during the ballistic missile strike on downtown Chernihiv.
“A passerby with a heart of gold transported her to the hospital with lacerated wounds. (She’s) been in the operating rooms all day. She was urgently transferred to Kyiv’s Oksmatdyt Hospital via an ambulance due to the complexity of her injuries.”
“Another surgery is currently underway. Doctors are fighting to preserve her arm,” wrote Diana Borets yesterday, as she initiated a fundraising effort for her sister’s treatment.
She shared photographs of her sibling before the tragedy unfolded on August 19th, as well as images from the scene in Chernihiv.
Later, the family announced the suspension of the fundraising campaign and expressed gratitude to all those who had contributed.
The sister of the wounded girl disclosed that while the child is currently in a state of shock following the surgery.
“There’s a minor concussion and lung contusion. At the moment, her life is not at risk. The main concern is avoiding complications. We hope her arm will recover. She’s in shock and psychologically scarred; doctors have refrained from making prognoses for now. Please join us in praying that she won’t lose her arm,” wrote Diana Borets last evening.
As of the morning of Aug. 20, there are still 41 out of the 148 injured in the Russian rocket strike being treated in Chernihiv hospitals. Fifteen have undergone surgeries, as announced by Vyacheslav Chaus, Governor of Chernihiv Oblast.
He noted that the death toll resulting from the malicious Russian attack remains unchanged, with the missile claiming the lives of seven people, including a 6-year-old girl.
