Ukrainians open to peace talks but demand no territorial concessions
A total of 57% of Ukrainians believe their country should enter negotiations with Russia to pursue peace, according to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) published on Aug. 1.
This sentiment is similar to that in May 2022, when 59% supported negotiations.
However, the survey reveals that Ukrainians are only open to peace talks under specific conditions. Sixty percent of respondents are unwilling to cede Crimea or any parts of eastern Ukraine, and 77% find negotiations based on the current territorial status quo unacceptable.
Additionally, 74% and 76% of those surveyed reject the idea of renouncing Ukraine's potential membership in NATO or the EU as a condition for peace.
Recent statements on peace plans and negotiations with Russia
Ukraine is preparing a "clear and detailed" plan to end the war, expected to be ready this year. Kyiv will soon present its vision on energy, food security, and POWs exchanges, President Zelenskyy said on June 28.
Ukraine will prepare a plan to settle the war by the second Global Peace Summit, a process expected to take several months, Zelenskyy said on June 27.
Ukraine aims to hold the second peace summit by the end of 2024, Ukrainian President’s Office said on June 21.
Russia could be involved in the second summit under a "grain deal" format, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba suggested on June 21.
Ukraine does not seek direct contact with the aggressor nation due to Russian crimes against Ukraine and its intention to destroy the country.
44% of Ukrainians in non-combat areas believe it is time to start official peace talks with Russia. 35% disagree, and 21% are undecided, a Razumkov Center poll commissioned by ZN.UA revealed on July 15.
Most Ukrainians across all oblasts do not agree with Putin's conditions.
