Germany ups Ukraine military aid to €7 billion in 2025 – Scholz
Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine will be boosted to €7 billion ($7.6 billion) in 2025, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters in Brussels before the European Council meeting on March 20.
He tied the increase to a recent Bundestag amendment to the constitution, enabling funding for Germany’s defense, European cooperation, and aid to Ukraine.
“This will also include, by the way, that once decisions are made, we will initiate a further increase in our military assistance to Ukraine,” Scholz stated.
“In total, it will be €7 billion. €4 billion ($4.3 billion) has already been planned, and another €3 billion ($3.3 billion) will be added. Germany was and will remain Ukraine’s biggest supporter in Europe this year, as it was last year.”
Scholz underscored Germany’s vision for Ukraine as an “independent, sovereign, and democratic state” on its path to EU membership, with a robust military even post-peace with Russia.
He also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire initiative, calling it a “first step” aligned with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ideas.
“But it must become reality—a lasting ceasefire meeting the criteria. That’s why significant support for Ukraine from the EU, allies, and individual nations remains crucial,” he added.
On March 19, Germany’s government approved an extra €3 billion for Ukraine in 2025, following the approval of a tax reform, following the Bundestag’s March 18 approval of a €500 billion ($542 billion) defense and infrastructure package after prolonged talks and compromises.
On March 17, Germany delivered a new aid package to Ukraine, including ammunition, air defense missiles, and drones.
