Belgorod governor urges resilience amid Ukrainian strikes, dismisses calls for shelter
Amid Ukrainian strikes against Belgorod Oblast, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov urged citizens to persevere and continue working, and dismissed the inclination to seek refuge in basements in a video posted on Jan. 12.
“Before today, we gathered and thought perhaps we should cancel due to the events at the end of 2023,” Gladkov said.
“There were continuous attacks for several days, resulting in many casualties.”
“However, we realized that, if we cancel, our enemy will achieve its goal,” he continued.
“I appreciated the words of the bishop: ‘The enemy will never achieve its goal because we are not mice. We will never sit in basements. We will stand, each at our workplace.”
Meanwhile, citizens of Belgorod do not seem opposed to seeking shelter, sometimes just in the entryways of the nearest apartment building. However, residents, hiding like mice, refuse to let them in.
Ukraine has recently intensified strikes on Belgorod Oblast as it targets the source of Russian strikes against Kharkiv.
