German ultra-leftists demand halt to Ukraine arms supplies, NATO exit

German ultra-leftists staged a protest in Berlin on Oct. 3, calling on the government to stop arms supplies to Ukraine and, in some cases, to leave NATO, Deutsche Welle and Zeit reported.
The protest took place on the German Unity Day, an annual holiday commemorating the reunification of Germany in 1990. Protesters carried banners with calls for diplomacy instead of war and demands to stop arms supplies to Ukraine.
Some demonstrators also expressed solidarity with people in the Gaza Strip, holding signs with messages such as "stop the occupation terror."
Organizers claimed that "significantly more than 40,000 people" attended the rally, while police estimated the number of participants to be less than 10,000.
Berlin police reported that the protest "passed without incidents," with no reports of disturbances or arrests.
Among the speakers at the rally was Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the German ultra-left party BSW. She called for negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and labeled American politicians as "war criminals."
Wagenknecht criticized what she called the "double standards" of Western politicians who brand Putin a war criminal and accused the German government of blindly following Washington's lead.
"We are once again facing the prospect of deploying American medium-range missiles in Germany," said Wagenknecht.
“Good God, this is madness. We should not go further in this direction. What is happening is extremely dangerous.”
Finally, she proposed forming a "battalion of warmongers" from German politicians to fight in Ukraine, mentioning among others Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a member of the European Parliament known for her pro-Ukrainian stance, and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who recently criticized the pro-Russian views of the BSW leader.
