Scholz emphasizes continued Western support for Kyiv as crucial for restoring peace in Europe

Berlin will not let up in its efforts to back Kyiv, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a gathering of European social democrats in Bucharest and urged continued Western support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, Reuters reported on April 6.
"The war in Ukraine ends the moment that (Russian dictator Vladimir) Putin decides to withdraw his troops. However, he will only take that decision if he realizes that he cannot win the war on the battlefield," he said, adding that the best way to prevent any escalation, including a potential conflict between Russia and NATO, is “effective deterrence.”
"Therefore we are investing more in our own security and defence jointly as Europeans so that no one dares to attack us. This also means putting narrow self-interest aside and building a strong and truly European defense industry."
Berlin has so far provided EUR 28 billion ($30.3 billion) in military support to Kyiv.
On March 29, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that fear of Putin was not driving the Olaf Scholz's reluctance to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
"The chancellor is not afraid of Putin," Baerbock said when asked whether Scholz was against sending Taurus out of fear of Putin.
Baerbock expressed concern over the ongoing public discourse on missile aid to Ukraine, warning that it could play into the hands of Russian military propaganda aimed at sowing discord within Western democracies.
