U.S. global leadership on the line in congressional hurdle to Ukraine aid – U.S. Secretary of State
If the US Congress does not approve more funding, including aid for Ukraine, it will become a "real problem" - not just for Ukraine but for the entire world, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, said in an interview with CNBC in Davos, Switzerland.
“There’s no magic pot of money,” he said. “If we don’t get that money, it’s a real problem. It’s a real problem for Ukraine. I think it’s a problem for us and our leadership around the world.”
Blinken is actively working to persuade Congress to approve the additional funding requested by President Joe Biden, expressing confidence in bipartisan support for such assistance in both chambers but stressing the need to "land that."
Out of the funds the US Congress is expected to approve, $50 billion will be used to purchase defense goods for Ukraine directly from the United States, Blinken said.
Russia continues to suffer strategic failure in Ukraine, and the U.S. “has a strong interest in making sure that persists,” he said.
“If we let Putin get away with this, if we drop our guard and everything we’re doing for Ukraine, then you open a pandora’s box and he will not stop with Ukraine and others, others would be aggressors in other parts of the world, they’ll take the lesson,” he warned.
The war between Russia and Ukraine is not a forever war, so the country's spending on assistance will also not be “forever expense,” he said.
As the U.S. helps Ukraine defend itself, they are working to ensure that Ukraine can “stand strongly on its own two feet militarily, economically, democratically” Blinken said.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
