UK Foreign Secretary Cameron calls Germany to supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has advocated for the delivery of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, asserting that such a move would not escalate the conflict, DW reported on March 7.
“These discussions have occurred repeatedly since the Russian invasion two years ago,” Cameron said.
“For instance, there were claims that supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons would lead to escalation. Yet, no such escalation occurred. Similarly, providing Ukraine with tanks was predicted to escalate the situation, which also did not materialize. The same was said about supplying Ukraine with long-range artillery or missiles, and again, no escalation ensued,” Cameron added.
In September 2023, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Berlin had not outright refused to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine but was presently not prepared to do so.
This hesitation may stem from concerns expressed by Olaf Scholz, who reportedly feared that Kyiv might use the missiles to attack Russian territory.
Despite Ukraine’s assurances that it will not employ Western long-range missiles to strike Russian soil, on Jan. 17, the Bundestag did not support a draft resolution advocating for the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, with only 178 out of 666 MPs voting in favor.
On Feb. 5, Christian Freuding, head of the Special Staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, said that long-range Taurus missiles cannot turn the tide of war in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
On Feb. 29, Scholz said that Germany was not ready to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles because they could be used to strike Moscow.
On March 4, Scholz said that he ruled out the possibility of giving Ukraine long-range Taurus missiles if German soldiers were to be involved in their operation.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
