Canberra allocates $20 million to support Ukraine's energy sector

Australia will donate $20 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, earmarked for the energy supplies Kyiv needs most, rather than the coal shipments previously requested, according to national broadcaster ABC on May 31.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that sending money was more cost-effective and convenient than shipping coal.
"If you ship coal from Australia, you have shipping and insurance costs," Wong explained.
"In fact, this amount of money, should Ukraine wish to spend it on coal, would yield an equivalent amount of coal to what we saw previously. But this allows Ukraine to make its own decisions about where it best applies this funding," she added.
Additionally, Canberra will provide an additional $11 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, primarily to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to help with essential needs such as food, water, and shelter.
Some of the funds will also be used to support people with disabilities through the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
