China calls for ‘restraint’ after Russian missile strike on Kyiv hospital
Both Ukraine and Russia should exhibit "calm and restraint" and refrain from actions that could lead to “further escalation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jiang said during a press conference on July 9.
His comments followed a Russian missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv on July 8.
In response to a question on whether China condemns the Russian strike on the hospital, the spokesperson stated that China's position on Ukraine remains "consistent and clear."
Jiang emphasized that Ukraine and Russia should adhere to "three principles" for de-escalation: avoiding expansion of hostilities, preventing their escalation, and agreeing to a ceasefire.
"All parties should remain calm and restrained and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation," Lin Jiang added.
In the morning and afternoon of July 8, Russia launched a series of massive strikes at Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and other Ukrainian cities. This is one of the largest and most severe attacks on Ukraine since the beginning of the year.
The missiles were allegedly launched by Tu-95, Tu-22, and MiG-31K aircraft, and ballistic missiles were also reported from Crimea.
Russia attacked the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, with two deaths reported. Russian troops also hit a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, where there are people under the rubble.
During a second attack on Kyiv, the Russians partially destroyed a medical center in Dniprovskyi district, killing eight people.
In total, damage was recorded in seven districts of Kyiv. A total of 32 people were killed in the capital.
In Dnipropetrovs’k Oblast, according to the State Emergency Service, 11 people died (including 10 in Kryvyi Rih and one in Dnipro), and 64 people were injured.
