China to adopt 'impartial, rational' position on Russian war against Ukraine, says foreign ministry

China can be an "objective and rational voice" in achieving a peaceful settlement to Russia’s war against Ukraine, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a phone talk on Aug. 8.
China also emphasized its "independent and impartial position" in a foreign ministry statement released following the summit in Saudi Arabia on finding a peaceful way to bring the war to an end.
The two-day talks helped "to consolidate international consensus," China's Foreign Ministry said.
Peace summit in Saudi Arabia: What is known
Two days of negotiations on the Ukrainian peace formula took place in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Aug. 5-6. Top diplomats and officials from about 40 countries took part in it, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, and South Africa with Russia excluded.
It is the second peace summit with the previous one held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2023.
All countries participating in the peace talks for Ukraine in Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to UN principles and respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Presidential adviser Andriy Yermak said.
Also, the participants agreed that any peace talks should be based on respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a 10-point "peace formula" at the G20 summit in November 2022. It includes the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all prisoners, a tribunal for those guilty of aggression, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
