Czech President authorizes 60 citizens to fight for Ukraine

Czech President Petr Pavel has authorized 60 Czech citizens
to participate in combat on Ukraine’s side, according to presidential
spokesperson Filip Potos, reported
by Český rozhlas on Nov. 2.
“The president approved 60 of the requests received,” the
spokesperson said.
In total, the president has received 181 such requests.
Before they reach the president, applications are reviewed by three ministries:
Defense, Interior, and Foreign Affairs.
Under Czech law, citizens are not allowed to join foreign
military or paramilitary forces without presidential approval. However, some
Czechs are known to fight for Ukraine without the required permit, making it
difficult to determine the exact number of those aiding Ukraine in its fight
against the aggressor.
Before Pavel’s term, his predecessor, Miloš Zeman, had
approved several applications.
On Oct. 10, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala assured that the
Czech initiative to provide Ukraine with 500,000 rounds of ammunition would
proceed as planned.
