U.S. President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social on Sept. 8, showing Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, and several Caribbean countries as if they were part of the United States, prompting sharp reactions from foreign governments.
The image showed the entire region covered in the colors of the U.S. flag and labeled “United States of America.” Trump provided no explanation or comment on the post.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by saying her country “was not and will not become a colony or protectorate of another state.”
“We are proud to be a free, independent, and sovereign nation,” Sheinbaum said.
Officials in Iceland and Denmark also reacted.
Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned the U.S. ambassador, according to Icelandic broadcaster RUV.
She said the government and people of Greenland had repeatedly made clear that they do not want to be Americans.
“I hope no one has any doubts about that — neither in the United States nor in the rest of the world,” she said.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen likewise said Greenlanders had repeatedly expressed no desire to become Americans.
“It is the people of Greenland who must decide their own future. And of course Greenland is not for sale,” Frederiksen said.
Trump’s territorial claims
Trump first raised the possibility of the United States buying Greenland from Denmark during his first term, from 2017 to 2021. At the time, he even floated a financial offer of $600 million a year for lifelong use of the island’s territory.
On Jan. 7, 2025, Trump did not rule out using military or economic pressure to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal. He also publicly called for Greenland to join the United States, calling that outcome inevitable.
At the same time, on Jan. 21 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said the United States would not use military force to gain control of Greenland.
Trump has also made comments about Canada. In February 2025, he said that “many people in Canada would like to be the 51st state” of the United States.
On Aug. 27, 2026, Trump signed an order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America and instructed the U.S. Interior Department to carry out the decision. The move came amid worsening relations between Washington and Ottawa after trade talks collapsed and new tariffs were imposed.
Then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rejected the idea, saying Canada joining the United States “is not a snowball's chance in hell.”
After taking office on Jan. 20, 2025, Trump also ordered that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the Gulf of America. He said the gulf was important to the U.S. economy and was the largest in the world.
