EU demands explanation from Hungary over eased entry for Russians, Belarusians
The European Commission is expecting an explanation from Hungary by August 19 regarding its decision to simplify entry conditions for citizens of Russia and Belarus, European Commission's representative Anitta Hipper said on Aug. 6.
Hipper stated that on Aug. 1, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson sent a letter to Hungary with detailed questions about Budapest's decision. The deadline for a response is set for Aug. 19.
"We have not received a response yet, but we are waiting for it," Hipper said.
Hipper added that Russia poses a threat to the security of the European Union, and Hungary is obliged to ensure that the entry conditions provided for in Article 6 of the Schengen Borders Code are met.
"This goes beyond just having a valid visa or residence permit, as all the checks need to be carried out," Hipper said.
Hungary recently eased entry conditions for Russians and Belarusians following Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's visit to Moscow. Budapest has included them in the "national card" program, which allows them to work in Hungary for two years with the possibility of extension.
