EU disburses $3.9 billion for missiles and drones for Ukraine

The European
Union will urgently provide Ukraine with EUR3.3 billion ($3.9 billion) to
strengthen its defense capabilities as Russia escalates its terror bombing
campaign, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced
on Sept. 17.
The funding will be used, among other things, to purchase missiles, ammunition and drones for Ukraine’s defense forces. In addition to the new financing, the EU plans to use remaining funds from its Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program to launch joint defense projects with Ukraine.
Von der Leyen said the cooperation would combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience and innovative development with the technological and industrial capabilities of European countries.
One key area will be the development of a European air and missile defense system. Its foundation is expected to be the joint Freyja system for countering ballistic missiles.
The European Commission president also expressed support for Ukrainians who face Russian attacks every day. During next week’s UN General Assembly in New York, she plans to call on international partners to increase aid to Ukraine.
“Europe is stepping up. Now others must step up their
support too,” she concluded.
