How European leaders praise democratic triumph in Budapest

TISZA party leader Péter Magyar won the parliamentary elections in Hungary as of preliminary vote counting data, and his European colleagues have already congratulated him, Reuters reported on April 12.
European leaders are already congratulating Péter Magyar on his victory, although the election commission has not yet released official data. Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, France, Finland, and Norway have released comments reacting to the results of the parliamentary race.
The President of the European Commission, the Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, and others joined in the congratulations.
Ukraine is ready to develop cooperation with Hungary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in particular.
"Ukraine has always strived for good neighborly relations with everyone in Europe, and we are ready to develop our cooperation with Hungary," he wrote.
"Europe and every European country must become stronger, and millions of Europeans strive for cooperation and stability. We are ready for meetings and joint constructive work for the benefit of both countries, as well as for peace, security, and stability in Europe."
Magyar's victory is a historic moment for Hungary, he added.
"This is a historic moment not only for Hungary but also for European democracy. I look forward to cooperating with you for the security and prosperity of both our countries."
France welcomes Magyar's democratically achieved victory, French President Emmanuel Macron noted.
"I just spoke with Péter Magyar to congratulate him on his victory in Hungary!" he said.
"France welcomes this victory in terms of the people's participation in the democratic process, a victory that demonstrates the Hungarian people's commitment to EU values and Hungary's role in Europe."
The elections in Hungary took place in a democratic manner, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted.
"The Hungarian people have decided," he added.
"My sincere congratulations on your election success. I look forward to working with you. Let's join forces for a strong, safe, and, above all, united Europe. Thank you very much, dear Hungarian Péter!"
Hungary is now "again" with Poland and Europe, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted.
"Hungary, Poland, Europe. Together again! A glorious victory, dear friends!" Polish PM said.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal also congratulated Magyar on his victory and stated that they look forward to further cooperation.
"A great victory for Hungary! A great victory for Europe! There are many things we could and should do for democracy, justice, and peace."
The results of the parliamentary elections are of great importance not only for Hungary but for all of Europe, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated.
"I congratulate Péter Magyar and TISZA on their victory in the parliamentary elections in Hungary — a result that is of great importance for all of Europe. I look forward to close and constructive cooperation in the pursuit of peace, stability, democracy, and the rule of law on our continent," the message read.
These election results give Hungary the opportunity to become an active EU member again, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo noted.
"The Hungarian people demonstrated their strong will to be an active member of the European Union and NATO in democratic elections. The election result gives Hungary the opportunity to return to our community of values and security as a constructive player."
Hungary has now chosen the European path, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated.
"Hungary chose Europe," she noted.
"Europe has always chosen Hungary. The country is regaining its European path. The Union is getting stronger... The heart of Europe beats stronger in Hungary tonight."
U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries rejoiced that Orbán lost the elections.
"The far-right authoritarian Viktor Orbán lost the election. Trump sycophants and MAGA extremists in Congress will be next in November. Winter is coming."
Péter Magyar's TISZA party is winning the parliamentary elections in Hungary with 98.32% of the votes counted; it is projected to win 138 seats in parliament, while Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party gets 55 seats.
