Finland summons Russian envoy over airspace violation
Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the ambassador of the aggressor state, Russia, following a violation of Finnish airspace by Russian military aircraft on May 23, Yle local outlet reported on May 25.
The publication cited the communications department of Finland’s Foreign Ministry.
The report indicated that two Russian military jets breached Finland’s airspace near Porvoo, in the south of the country.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said the suspected violation of territorial integrity is being “taken seriously.”
Finland will send a formal request to Russia for clarification regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard has launched a preliminary investigation.
On May 13, the Estonian General Staff of the Defense Ministry reported that a Russian Su-35 fighter jet violated Estonian airspace. The aircraft reportedly stayed in Estonian airspace for less than a minute. It lacked a flight plan, its transponder was off, and it had no two-way radio contact with Estonia’s air traffic control.
On May 14, Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian embassy’s military attaché and handed over a formal protest note.
