Former chancellor Schröder attends party at Russian embassy in Berlin
Former German Chancellor Gerhard
Schröder’s ties with the Kremlin have plunged him into a new controversy: on
May 9, he attended the Victory Day party at the Russian Embassy in Berlin,
German newspaper Bild reported on May 10.
Photos from the event show Schröder and his wife among the guests, including former General Secretary of the East German Socialist Unity Party Egon Krenz, as well as leaders of the right-wing AfD party and left-wing Die Linke, who support lifting EU sanctions from Russia.
Western diplomats skipped the event as a sign of protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Schröder had served on the board of directors of Russia’s oil giant Rosneft since 2007 and left this position in May 2022. He has stated that he does not regret his foreign policy stance towards Russia and does not intend to distance himself from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
