France threatens Tesla with fines over deceptive self-driving claims
French regulators have demanded that Tesla stop advertising its vehicles as fully autonomous, warning the U.S. automaker of €50,000 ($58,017) daily fines for “deceptive marketing practices,” Politico reported on June 24.
The order, issued by France’s consumer protection agency on June 24, follows an investigation conducted in 2023 and 2024 prompted by numerous complaints.
The probe found Tesla violated French law in several instances, including delayed order fulfillment and failure to provide cash payment receipts.
Elon Musk’s company has four months to comply with the requirements before fines take effect, according to Politico.
This is not the first time Tesla has faced scrutiny over its autonomous vehicle claims.
In 2020, Germany’s antitrust authority sued Tesla over similar marketing statements, alleging the company promised more than it could deliver. Tesla successfully appealed and continues to advertise its vehicles as autonomous in Germany.
In the United States, Tesla has faced multiple lawsuits related to fatal crashes involving its Autopilot feature, which enables vehicles to steer, brake, and accelerate independently.
“Once a desirable brand, Tesla is now facing numerous headwinds in France thanks to Musk's politics,” Politico stated.
Previously, in June 2025, Sweden’s largest national pension fund, AP7, added Tesla to its “blacklist” and sold all its shares in the electric vehicle manufacturer.
