Marine Le Pen, de-facto leader of France’s
far-right National Rally party, said France could no longer afford to provide
Ukraine with financial assistance, Le Figaro reported on Sept. 16.
Le Pen cited France’s deteriorating financial situation. “Given how much we have already done, we are saying that we can no longer continue,” she said.
Le Pen claimed her position was not “hostile to Ukraine.”
“We can continue training Ukrainian soldiers; we can continue providing them with equipment so they can defend themselves,” she stated.
“But financially, we can no longer afford it.”
On July 7, Le Pen announced that she would run for president of France in 2027. She remains the National Rally’s most prominent public figure, although Jordan Bardella has officially led the party since November 2022.
Earlier, Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right,
pro-Russia AfD party, said Berlin would end all support for Ukraine if her
party came to power.
