France, Slovakia delay EU’s Russia sanctions renewal

The European Union has failed to agree on extending
individual sanctions
against Russia because of disagreements over changes to the list of sanctioned
individuals, RFE/RL editor Rikard Jozwiak reported on Sept. 11, citing sources.
According to Jozwiak, EU ambassadors plan to meet again on Sept. 14, one day before the sanctions are set to expire.
“Slovakia still wants [Russian oligarchs] Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman delisted, but the issue is now further complicated as France also wants Usmanov off the blacklist,” Jozwiak said in a Twitter post.
EU member states must agree to extend the sanctions by Sept. 15. Otherwise, some individual restrictions against Russian nationals could expire.
On Sept. 3, Politico reported that Slovakia’s
government had rejected a proposal to extend the EU’s individual sanctions
package against Russia for 12 months.
