German opposition seeks Bundestag vote on supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine

Germany’s opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is pushing for a vote in the Bundestag on the transfer of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, German news outlet ntv.de reported on Jan. 16.
CDU parliamentary leader Friedrich Merz announced plans to table a corresponding motion on Jan. 17.
The vote is expected to follow a report by Germany's defense policy spokesperson, Eva Hogl (SPD).
"The situation in Ukraine is becoming increasingly critical," Merz said.
He added that while the Ukrainian defense forces currently "see no prospects" of repelling the Russian invasion, German-made Taurus missiles could help change that situation.
Merz also called on members of the German government to support the initiative.
Previously, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, head of the Bundestag's defense committee, supported the transfer of Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains reluctant to arm the Ukrainian military with weapons that could potentially be used to strike Russian territory, despite the UK, France, and the United States providing Ukraine with similar munitions since 2023.
