Hungarian MP asks U.S. for Russia sanctions exemption

Márton Hajdu, an MP from Hungary’s ruling Tisza party, asked
U.S. Republicans to exempt Hungary from a newly approved law threatening
sanctions on buyers of Russian energy.
Hajdu made the request in a Facebook post after meeting with members of the Republican majority in the U.S. House on Sept. 17.
According to Hajdu, the House approved a bill that same day imposing tariffs on major buyers of Russian energy, posing a risk to Hungary and other countries.
“It was important to inform our American partners that Tisza understands the dangers and shortcomings of dependence on Russian energy and that the party will present a plan to overcome them in the near future,” he said.
“I asked our American partners to help exempt Hungary from the law and for the United States to support our country’s efforts to diversify its energy supplies.”
A bill imposing new sanctions on Russia was introduced in the U.S. Senate in early April 2025. It called for a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that continued buying Russian oil and other raw materials. Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal co-sponsored the legislation.
The U.S. Senate held its first procedural vote on the bill on
July 28, 2026, with 86 senators voting in favor of advancing the
legislation. The House passed the bill on Sept. 16, with 262 votes to
159.
