India says it acted as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia on Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant
During Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, India
maintained contacts with both sides and occasionally relayed messages between
them, including on issues related to the safety of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear
Power Plant, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told Politico
on June 10.
Jaishankar said India “never sought” nor claimed any
specific role for itself. “If we can be of help… we are open, but we don’t
impose ourselves,” he stated.
Last September, Jaishankar had already emphasized that India
has no independent “peace plan” but remains engaged in dialogue with both
Russia and Ukraine in hopes of advancing peace talks.
According to him, the Indian government has been speaking to
both parties to assess whether it can help accelerate the end of the war and
launch “serious negotiations.”
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a
meeting with Donald Trump, said his country stands on the side of peace in
Russia’s war against Ukraine and supports U.S. initiatives to end the conflict.
On Aug. 23, 2024, Modi visited Ukraine — marking the first
visit by an Indian prime minister since the country gained independence in
1991. He met with Zelenskyy and stressed the need for negotiations with Russia
to bring the war to an end.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
