Kazakhstan will not help Russia circumvent sanctions — president Tokayev
Kazakhstan's
President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has stated that his country will not assist
Russia in bypassing Western sanctions imposed over the invasion of Ukraine,
Reuters reported on Sept. 28.
During a briefing with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Tokayev reassured that Germany should not fear Kazakhstan’s potential assistance to Moscow in evading sanctions.
The Kazakh leader further stressed that his country continues to urge peace talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war. He also indicated that he had no fears of Moscow threatening Kazakhstan's own territorial integrity.
“The time has come for rational, I would say, wise diplomacy,” said Tokayev.
“It is time to end mutual accusations and begin talking business in order to find the basis for peace talks that would be acceptable to both sides.”
In early August, it was reported that Kazakhstan intends to ban merchandise featuring Russian pro-war branding. The decision to remove such items from store shelves was made in response to the "ambiguous reaction" they elicit from the public.
