Kharkiv renames several streets in honor of fallen Ukrainian heroes
The Kharkiv City Council has renamed several streets associated with Russia and the Soviet Union in honor of fallen Ukrainian defenders, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported on Telegram on June 13.
From now on:
• Plekhanivska Street will be called Heorhiy Tarasenko Street (leader of the Freikorps volunteer group);
• Derzhavinska Street — Dmytro Kotsiubailo Street (the Vovky Da Vinci battalion commander);
• Bronenostsia Potemkin Street — Oleh Hromadskyi Street (combatant and guardsman, colonel);
• nameless square on Kontorska Street — Vladyslava Chernykh Square (a combat medic of the Khartia unit).
“These heroes died for all of us,” Terekhov said.
“For the freedom of Kharkiv. For the independence of Ukraine. And they deserve to be immortalized in people’s memory forever.”
In addition, the Gorky Park will now officially be called the Central Park of Culture and Recreation as “this name has long taken root among Kharkiv residents.”
Those residents who live on streets with new names do not need to change their registration and ownership documents, the mayor clarified.
“All toponymic decisions regarding the renaming of streets and squares have unanimously been passed by the city councilors,” Terekhov said.
“Further work in this direction continues.”
