Klitschko honors hundreds of murdered Ukrainian athletes as Paris Olympics begin

“The 487 Ukrainian athletes who were tortured, raped, and murdered, during the Russian invasion war” are missing from the “beautiful and successful” opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko wrote on X on July 26.
"Today I want to honor their sacrifices and pay my respects," he said, reminding the world of the horrific Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The spectacular opening ceremony took place in Paris on the night of July 27, with an armada of boats carrying athletes from around the world along the Seine River. It became the largest open-air show in the world, with more than 300,000 people watching from the riverbanks and bridges.
Tennis star Elina Svitolina, who won a bronze medal at the previous Games in Tokyo, was one of the flag-bearers for Ukraine at the ceremony.
Svitolina was joined by swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk, a silver and bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympics, according to the press service of the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee.
Organizers point out that the 2024 Olympics will be the first in history to achieve gender balance, with 50% of participants being women and 50% men.
