Ukraine’s SBU Security Service has charged Kremlin
propagandist Nikolay Cherkashin in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast, the SBU
reported on Telegram on July 23.
Cherkashin leads the so-called “DPR” (Donetsk People’s
Republic) media holding, which he has run since 2023, the SBU said.
The “DPR” media holding includes 24 online and print
publications, nine TV channels, and six radio stations. Under Cherkashin’s
direction, these outlets justify Russia’s war against Ukraine and Russian war
crimes, the SBU said.
The information resources controlled by Cherkashin
disseminate fake news about the operational situation on the front lines and in
the frontline territories of Ukraine.
Cherkashin involves “subordinate propagandists” in creating
commissioned stories for central Russian TV channels.
Cherkashin previously worked on various media projects in
Donetsk Oblast. However, after Russians captured the oblast center — Donetsk —
he supported the “DPR” terrorists, the SBU said.
Cherkashin became part of the inner circle of Denis
Pushilin, the leader of the terrorist organization “DPR,” who later facilitated
Cherkashin’s “appointment” as the “general director” of the occupation media
holding.
Cherkashin has been charged in absentia under Part 6 of Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (engaging in information activities in cooperation with the aggressor state and/or its occupation administration). He faces up to 12 years in prison.
