Hungary’s Orbán obsessed with EU funding to maintain regime, claims Ukrainian FM Kuleba
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán thinks only of receiving EU funding, which allows him to maintain political stability in Hungary, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in an interview with German news outlet Bild on June 30.
Following Orbán’s comments on June 27 that "Ukraine is no longer a sovereign state,” Kuleba noted that the statement is a "distorted interpretation of reality" caused by the Hungarian government's inner fears of daunting challenges within their own country.
"Hungary is desperately fighting for EU funds to maintain its macro-financial stability and avoid unrest in the country," the minister said.
Orbán has repeatedly made pro-Russian statements in regard to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. He also vocally supported a so-called Chinese "peace proposal”, which was heavily criticized by the Ukrainian government as simply a proxy for Russian interests.
Additionally, Hungary is also believed to be detaining eight Ukrainian prisoners-of-war after receiving them from Russia without informing the Ukrainian government – an act some experts believe to be a war crime.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
