A protest is taking place in Kyiv on July 16 against President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision not to renominate Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister.
The protest is being held in Franko Square near the Ivan Franko Theater, Suspilne reported in a livestream.
Protesters chanted “Fedorov” and held signs reading: “Why?”, “Reforms must continue,” “Zelenskyy, wrong dashboard,” “Don’t touch what works,” and “Vova, what are you doing?”
Fedorov dismissal: What is known
Zelenskyy said on July 15 that he had not yet decided whether Fedorov would remain defense minister in the new government after Yulia Svyrydenko’s dismissal as prime minister.
Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak later said Zelenskyy would nominate Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko to replace Fedorov as defense minister.
Fedorov faced sharp resistance from Ukraine’s military leadership over his reforms, despite success in developing drone technologies and digitalizing the army, The Economist reported.
A parliamentary vote on the new Cabinet is expected on July 16.
Protests against Fedorov’s dismissal have already begun in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and other cities, with people taking to the streets to call on authorities not to remove the minister.
Fedorov earlier published a list of his achievements as defense minister.
Among them, he named the integration of Pavlo “Lazar” Yelizarov into the Air Force and the introduction of an After Action Review procedure after every massive Russian attack.
During that period, the interception rate of Russian drones increased from 83% to 91%, while the interception rate of cruise missiles rose from 47% to 87%, Fedorov said.
