Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov defended Moscow’s strategic alliance with North Korea and Iran, questioning criticism of Russia’s reliance on pariah states in an RBC interview on Aug. 28.
"You mentioned North Korea. Essentially, we now have two allies — North Korea and Iran. Everyone is wondering: how did we get here, how did we end up in such company?" an interviewer asked in footage that circulated rapidly across social media.
In response, the Russian foreign minister retorted: "What's wrong with that company?"
"Countries earlier viewed across the world as pariah states have become Russia’s principal allies. Many people are asking: why did this happen?" the interviewer pressed.
"They were deemed pariahs by those who imagined themselves victors in the Cold War and proclaimed the 'end of history' for all eternity," Lavrov claimed, attempting to rationalize Moscow's embrace of the Iranian and North Korean regimes while deflecting responsibility toward Western nations in standard Russian propaganda fashion.
In the interview with Russian state-controlled media, Lavrov also asserted that Moscow conducts "street-style" diplomacy and expects to leverage this posture to broker an agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine.
