Lviv Mayor Sadovyi addresses Poles blockading border with Ukraine in Polish
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi has appealed to the Poles to end the blockade of the Ukrainian border, which has been going on since early November in a Facebook post published in Polish.
The mayor of Lviv called on the blockers to "return to reality."
"All your gigantic contribution to Ukraine's victory in this war is being nullified by a group of marginalized people who are blocking humanitarian supplies to a country that has been defending its independence and European security for two years," said Sadovyi.
“Does Poland have the courage, political will, and civic tools to end this shameful blockade of Ukraine? The price is too high.”
Blockade of the Ukrainian-Polish border: what is known
On Nov. 6, Polish truckers blocked three border checkpoints for freight transport: Korczowa-Krakivets, Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska, and Dorohusk-Yahodyn. On Nov. 22, the blockade of the Yahodyn-Dorohusk checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border was extended until Feb. 1, 2024.
On Nov. 13, Ukraine failed to reach an agreement with the Polish carriers to unblock the border. By Nov. 16, the European Commission announced it might initiate punitive proceedings against Poland.
On Nov. 21, Slovak carriers similarly blocked a border crossing with Ukraine. However, at 12 a.m., the Ukrainian-Slovak border was unblocked and trucks started moving.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach said that the blocking of one of the checkpoints in Slovakia was unofficial and did not represent the country's association of carriers.
On Nov. 23, truck traffic was also blocked in Poland on the road leading to the Medyka crossing, adjacent to the Ukrainian Shehyni checkpoint.
