Putin stands firm against ceasefire, Macron tells Zelenskyy
French President Emmanuel Macron informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s stance on the full-scale war has not changed, Bloomberg reported on July 1, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter.
The source stated that Putin continues to reject a ceasefire but provided no further details.
On July 1, Macron held a phone call with Putin and spoke with Zelenskyy twice—before and after the conversation with the Russian leader.
The New York Times earlier reported that Macron and Putin appeared to find common ground on Iran, but their differences over the war in Ukraine persist.
The Kremlin confirmed the call, stating that Putin described Russia’s war against Ukraine as a “direct consequence of Western policies.”
According to Le Parisien, Macron urged Putin for a ceasefire “as soon as possible” and intends to continue “exchanging views” with him, the Élysée Palace said.
The last time Macron spoke with Putin was in September 2022, in a call lasting over two hours, primarily focused on the situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, according to French officials.
