Putin unwilling to negotiate peace - Macron and Starmer

French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to engage in peace negotiations, accusing him of escalation, le Figaro outlet reported on Nov. 17.
Their statements reflect European concerns about Russia's intentions to escalate hostilities, not negotiate - especially after the mass combined strike on Ukraine energy infrastructure on Nov. 17.
Macron highlighted the international community’s obligation to push Russia towards ending the conflict under terms respecting international law.
"Despite his claims, Putin doesn’t seek peace or readiness for dialogue, " French leader said, however, leaving the door open for future talks "when the context is appropriate."
Starmer ruled out direct communication with Putin.
“This is a question for Chancellor Scholz, regarding whom he decides to talk to. I have no plans to speak with Putin,” British Prime Minister said in an interview with Sky News on his way to G20 summit in Brazil.
He urged global leaders at the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil to intensify support for Ukraine, highlighting the urgency as the war nears its thousandth day and warning of severe implications for European security.
