Merz calls Scholz ‘isolated’ in the EU
Leader of the German opposition bloc CDU/CSU and candidate
for Chancellor Friedrich Merz said current Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in “literal
isolation” within the European Union, according to N-tv.
Merz believes that the foreign policy of Scholz’s government
can only be described as a “complete failure,” and that the Chancellor has
become “isolated” from other European leaders.
“Unfortunately, we must acknowledge: most European heads of
state and government simply are no longer interested in meeting with the German
Chancellor, who either sits silently for hours or delivers lectures around the
world,” said the leader of the CDU/CSU bloc.
As evidence for his claim, Merz referred to French President
Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Poland this week, where he, alongside NATO
ally Prime Minister Donald Tusk, discussed policies regarding Ukraine.
“And once again, the German Chancellor was absent,” the
opposition leader concluded.

Germany’s ruling coalition collapsed after Chancellor Olaf
Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Nov. 6. Other ministers
followed, including his allies in the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
According to The Guardian, government insiders suggested
that Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential elections would draw
Germany’s attention and force Social Democrats, the Greens, and the Free
Democratic Party (FDP) to recognize the need for unity. However, infighting and
hostility in Berlin persisted.
On Nov. 12, Bloomberg reported that German lawmakers had
agreed to hold early elections on Feb. 23, 2025.
On Dec. 11, Olaf Scholz officially requested a vote of
confidence for his government in the Bundestag. German media reported that the
vote is scheduled for Dec. 16.
