Mexico rejects Ukraine's request to arrest Putin should he attend presidential inauguration

Mexico will not arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin should he visit the country for the upcoming presidential inauguration in October, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at governmental press conference on Aug. 8, Reuters reported.
His statement comes after Putin was invited to attend newly elected president Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration, scheduled for Oct. 1, 2024.
Russian dictator previously congratulated her on her election victory in June, referring to Mexico as a "historically friendly partner of Russia in Latin America."
Ukraine's embassy in Mexico urged the Mexican government to arrest Putin, pointing to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
"We hope the Mexican government recognizes that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal with an arrest warrant issued against him," the embassy's statement said.
"We cannot arrest anybody," López Obrador commented.
It's beyond our jurisdiction."
The Hague-based ICC issued a warrant for Putin's arrest on March 17, 2023, over allegations of deporting Ukrainian children to Russia and committing war crimes in Ukraine.
Putin could potentially be arrested in any of the 123 countries that have ratified the Rome Statute, which includes Mexico.
While Russia is not a member of the ICC, Mexico is.
