Denmark to pioneer joint drone, missile production with Ukraine, says Zelenskyy
Denmark will be the first country to launch joint missile and drone production with Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on June 25, after talks with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, according to a statement from the President’s Office.
Zelenskyy said the talks covered the development of weapons co-production, Denmark’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, and continued support for Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
A key focus was deepening defense cooperation, with plans to manufacture weapons both in Ukraine and Denmark. Denmark will allocate €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) in 2025 to support Ukrainian production of long-range drones.
“Important decisions have been made — Denmark will be the first country with which we launch joint defense production,” Zelenskyy said. “Every country that sincerely helps Ukraine now can count on mutually beneficial partnerships with us. We are strengthening Europe together.”
On June 24, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen signed a Letter of Intent in The Hague to establish joint defense production in Denmark.
On June 5, Umerov stated that an initial €428 million ($497 million) tranche, following the Danish model, would soon fund Ukrainian production of artillery, strike drones, missiles, and anti-tank weapons.
Reports indicate Denmark has facilitated direct procurement of arms for Ukraine’s Armed Forces from Ukrainian manufacturers.
The Danish model has proven effective, with Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Norway, and Iceland collectively committing €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) in 2025 for Ukrainian-made artillery, drones, missiles, and anti-tank weapons.
Approximately €830 million ($963 million) of this funding comes from EU revenues generated by frozen Russian assets.
