NATO on Transnistria: Russia undermining Moldova’s democracy, but no military threat seen
NATO has addressed reports from Moldova about a possible
Russian troop buildup in Transnistria, saying the alliance currently sees no
military threat to the country. The statement came during a closed briefing,
according to Newsmaker, which cited a
senior NATO official.
The NATO representative stressed that Russia has been actively working to undermine Moldova’s democratic institutions during both the presidential election and the constitutional referendum.
According to the
official, Moscow spent millions of dollars in 2024 to fund Kremlin-aligned
parties and support their disinformation campaigns on social media.
At the same time, the official said there are no signs of an
immediate military threat to Moldova from Russia.
“When it comes to a real military threat right now, NATO
does not see any indication of a direct Russian military threat to Moldova,”
the official said.
He also noted that NATO is using its capabilities to assist
Moldova with airspace security.
Earlier, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said Russia
intends to significantly increase its troop presence in the unrecognized region
of Transnistria. However, he noted that the Kremlin is unable to do so, as the
territory is landlocked between Ukraine and Moldova.
On June 6, former deputy head of Ukraine’s HUR military
intelligence service Illia Pavlenko said the aggressor state — Russia — is
stoking regional tension by fueling frozen conflicts in Georgia, Transnistria,
and the South Caucasus.
