Parliament appoints Mykhailo Fedorov as Ukraine’s Defense Minister

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada appointed Mykhailo Fedorov as Defense Minister as 277 lawmakers voted in favor of the decision, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote on Jan. 14.
All parliamentary parties supported the appointment, he highlighted.
Fedorov became Ukraine’s fourth defense minister since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He replaces Denys Shmyhal, who led the Defense Ministry since July 2025.
On Jan. 13, parliament dismissed Fedorov from his previous posts as minister of Digital Transformation. He headed the Ministry of Digital Transformation since Aug. 29, 2019, serving in the governments of Oleksii Honcharuk, Denys Shmyhal, and Yuliia Svyrydenko.
On Jan. 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed appointing Fedorov as defense minister, while Shmyhal was nominated to lead the Energy Ministry.
