Polish FM offers placing Crimea under UN mandate in 'fair referendum' preparation

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed to place the temporarily Russian-occupied Crimea under a United Nations mandate to prepare for a "fair referendum", Interfax-Ukraine reported on Sept. 18.
The Crimea holds symbolic importance for Russian President Vladimir Putin but is also strategically crucial for Ukraine, he noted.
Therefore, Sikorski believes that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is unlikely without the peninsula demilitarization.
"Should both countries agree, a solution could be found," the Polish minister said.
"We could place Crimea under a UN mandate with a mission to prepare a fair referendum after verifying who the legitimate residents are, and so on... We could delay this process by 20 years."
Crimea Platform Summit on Sept. 11
On Sept. 11, Kyiv hosted the fourth summit of the International Crimea Platform. Notable attendees included Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Czech Senate Chairman Miloš Vystrčil, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, and other foreign officials.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Minister David Lammy also visited Kyiv on the same day.
