Former U.S. President Barack Obama defended President Joe Biden amidst criticism following his debate with Donald Trump, in a post on X on June 28.
The first presidential debate did not change his opinion regarding the 2024 election, Obama said.
"Bad debate nights happen," he said.
"Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth, knows right from wrong, and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit."
The editorial board of The New York Times published a statement on June 28 calling on President Joe Biden to withdraw his candidacy from the upcoming November election.
Biden vs Trump debate
The main topics of the debate were abortion and immigration in the United States, the American economy, and Russia's war against Ukraine. Both candidates exchanged numerous personal accusations, with Biden reminding Trump of his affair with Stormy Daniels, making him the first former president in U.S. history to be convicted of a serious criminal offense, while Trump, 78, emphasized Biden's age, 81, and his often confusing way of speaking.
Trump's statements were filled with manipulations, unreliable facts, and outright lies that the debate moderators were unable to effectively refute, according to reports from CNN and The Guardian. Biden, on the other hand, spoke with a hoarse voice due to a cold, which, along with his occasionally confusing remarks, highlighted his age.
"President Joe Biden is three years and seven months older than former President Donald Trump. During Thursday's debate, the gap between the 81-year-old incumbent and his 78-year-old rival seemed much wider," commented CNN, delivering a disappointing verdict on Biden's debate performance.
"If Joe Biden loses November’s election, history will record that it took just 10 minutes to destroy a presidency. Objectively, Biden produced the weakest performance since John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon started the tradition of televised debates in 1960," CNN wrote.
On the same day, Politico wrote that Democratic representatives were considering replacing Biden as their candidate after his “disastrous” debate performance.
Three analysts close to potential Democratic presidential candidates said they were “bombarded with text messages” during the debate. One of these sources said they had been approached by their candidate about running as an alternative to Biden.
Another Democratic adviser claimed that “at least half a dozen key Democratic Party donors” allegedly texted him about the “disaster” and urged the party to “do something.” At the same time, this source acknowledged that a replacement is “unlikely” unless Biden himself decides to drop out of the race.
