Romania will continue to support Ukraine - Nicuşor Dan
Romania will continue to back Ukraine amid war ongoing, as it is a better neighbor than Russia or any state under Russian influence, newly elected Romanian President Nicuşor Dan said, local outlet Digi24 wrote on June 2.
He made this statement when responding to a question about Romania’s transparency regarding military aid to Ukraine.
"I don’t yet know what the full benefits or risks are," he said.
"In any case, Romania will continue to support Ukraine because this concerns our own security. It’s one thing to have Ukraine on our eastern border — with which we’ve had a treaty since 1997 — and quite another to have Russia or a country becoming like Belarus.”
He added that matters related to military support will be discussed during his upcoming visit to Ukraine, which could happen very soon.
“It’s very likely I’ll attend the summit in Odesa on June 11, where the discussions will be more technical,” the Romanian president noted.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Dan may visit Ukraine this summer.
“Romania, under the new president’s leadership, will continue to support Ukraine’s path to EU and NATO membership," Zelenskyy told journalists via Zoom on June 2.
"We agreed that he will visit us — I believe it will happen soon, in summer.”
Nicuşor Dan is a pro-European centrist politician, former Bucharest mayor, and a supporter of aid to Ukraine. In the second round of Romania’s presidential elections on May 18, he defeated pro-Russian candidate George Simion with 53.6% to 46.4% of the vote.
