Russian forces have been striking civilian vessels that remain blocked in Mykolaiv Oblast ports since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) reported on July 27.
Russian forces struck civilian merchant vessels in Mykolaiv Oblast ports overnight into July 27, killing one person and injuring others.
"The vessels caught in enemy fire are ones that have remained blocked in Ukrainian ports since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 and are not conducting commercial voyages," the agency said.
USPA called the strike another deliberate attack by Moscow on Ukrainian civilian shipping and port infrastructure.
"Attacks on vessels that have been unable to leave blocked ports for years once again demonstrate the systematic nature of Russian terror against the maritime industry and pose a direct threat to the lives of civilian sailors," the agency said.
Ukraine called on the international maritime community to respond decisively to Russian strikes on civilian merchant shipping.
Earlier on July 27, Heorhiy Reshetilov, acting head of the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration, said Russian forces attacked the region with Shahed strike drones the previous day and again that morning. Port infrastructure in the Mykolaiv district came under attack, injuring one man and damaging three civilian vessels. Reshetilov later said a 48-year-old man had died.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on July 23 that Russian forces had attacked 31 merchant vessels since the start of July.
"These are targeted strikes on civilian shipping, freedom of navigation and the food security of millions of people in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America," Sybiha said.
Russia has recently intensified attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and civilian vessels in the Black Sea. The strikes threaten international shipping and food supplies to countries dependent on Ukrainian exports.
Russian attacks have blocked traffic through Ukraine's maritime corridor. Ukraine has called for an urgent session of the U.N. Security Council, warning of the risk of a food crisis affecting millions of people.
