Russian hand suspected in Berlin's Diehl Metall steel plant fire
Russia may be tied to the fire that engulfed the Diehl Metall steel plant in Berlin last May, Bild reported on Telegram on June 21, citing a source.
A foreign intelligence service has informed German authorities about evidence suggesting Russia's involvement in the fire at Diehl Metall, the publication said. The plant is part of the German conglomerate Diehl Defense, known for manufacturing the IRIS-T air defense systems, among other products, including those supplied to Ukraine.
The Berlin branch of Diehl is primarily involved in metal processing for industries like automotive, rather than military weaponry production.
German authorities are currently scrutinizing the intelligence received. It remains unclear why the target was Diehl Metall's steel plant rather than Diehl's military facility. The capital of Germany may have been the intended target, Bild said.
A severe fire broke out at the Diehl Metall steel plant in Berlin on May 3. Four floors of the building have been destroyed, with part of the structure collapsing.
Diehl Defense weapon manufactury facility operates out of southern Germany and was not affected by this incident.
